Benjamin Lewis – Sub Tectum Meum: The Question of Beauty in Liturgical Translation

Join us on Wednesday, March 22 at 7:30 pm in McAllister Board Room for a presentation by Dr. Benjamin Lewis, Director of Translation Services for the International Commission on English in the Liturgy. Dr. Lewis will discuss some of the difficulties of translation, especially how to ensure that the translation is beautiful in its own right without diverging from the literal meaning of the text. Dr. Lewis will also elucidate the role of the International Commission on English in the Liturgy, whose purpose is to prepare English translations of each Catholic Latin liturgical book and any individual liturgical texts in accord with the directives of the Holy See. John Canning & Co. on Authentic Church Restoration

Join us for a presentation by representatives from John Canning & Co.

John Canning & Co. is a decorative painting and ornamental plastering company based in Connecticut. The company focuses on historic preservation as well as the new design of period interiors across the United States. Canning Liturgical Arts is a branch of the company devoted to church restoration and beautification. The lecture will discuss how the different decorative trades, from gilding and stenciling to running moulds and plaster casts, come together to restore beauty to a historic interior. Canning continues to utilize traditional methods of the trade and pass on trade techniques through apprenticeships. Beginning with the preliminary design and research phase to the completed project, it is the role of the craftsman to bring the ideas of the architect and client into being. In addition to illustrating the design and restoration process, Canning will walk through the relationship of the decorative arts to architecture as well as introduce the many skilled craftsmen capable of bringing a watercolor rendering to life.

The presentation will be March 16 at 7:30 pm in McAllister Board Room, Fourth Floor, Ferrell Academic Center. Unable to join? Tune in on our Benedictine College Lectures YouTube channel.

Denis McNamara – “The Objectivity of Beauty: Understanding the Realist Tradition”

Dr. Denis McNamara, Executive Director of the Center for Beauty and Culture at Benedictine College presented “The Objectivity of Beauty” at Transfiguration Catholic Church, Oakdale, MN. This introduction to the theology of Beauty helps answer the question of the “objectivity” of Beauty as understood in the Catholic tradition. In a world which sees beauty as radically subjective and therefore “in the eye of the beholder,” this interactive presentation will use music and images to introduce beauty as an attribute of Being, and therefore deeply connected with the reality of things as God created them. It will equip the listener to understand why Beauty is both subjective and objective, and how it can be discussed in daily life.
